Ever wondered what the viewers in the rest of Europe are watching? With so many people from European countries like Poland, Romania, the Czech Republic and others on the move throughout the continent, satellite TV is an ideal way to keep in touch with your home country news, entertainment and sport. Satellite TV is also a fantastic tool if you are trying to learn a new language?

Satellite TV here in the UK is booming business and no longer do its citizens just think of Sky TV whose rather expensive services have been without much competition for a long time, but now think of TV from all of Europe and the Middle East. Above our heads are over 55 satellites orbiting at about 36000 kilometres and at least 20 of them can be received with quite modest domestic receivers. Even a motorised satellite dish and receiver is now an affordable option.

Have a look in your area, at the new satellite dishes appearing all over the place and pointing in different directions to the usual small sky dish. More and more pubs are opting to show live sports for their clients entertainment including football and boxing.

Installing one is not as difficult as it may seem, the choice of equipment depends on what you hope to receive. A good size dish to receive the common European channels would be 80cm. If you are new to satellite TV you might want a motorized dish to maximize the number of countries and channels you can receive. Those who have had foreign satellite before may opt for equipment which can receive only a few different satellites from their countries of interest, so a fixed dish with two or more LNBs ( signal pickups ) might be a better option. A motorized dish will take time to turn from one satellite to another, so channel hoppers will have to be patient!

Having decided on your dish, how do you get it set up to receive the channels you want. The family will not be impressed if all you can see is a Brazilian Soap Opera! First you need some information, which can be obtained either on the internet at http://www.lyngsat.com or in a magazine called "What Satellite" you may have to order it, not many newsagents have it on show, although my local Meadowhall WHSmiths does have it every month. In the blue section marked "channel check" all the broadcasting satellites are listed with their transponders (just a term for transmitters) their frequencies and other tuning information and most important their receiving angle. For example TVP a Polish main channel, is found at 19 degrees East, on frequency 10.862 GHz Symbol Rate 22000 and FEC 5/6. Don't worry about the last two, even if you have to enter it manually into the receiver its not difficult and most receivers have automatic tuning.

Choose a suitable south facing wall, using a compass, ensure there is no obstruction in the direction of your satellite. To take the above example of 19 degrees. Face South, turn to the Left until your compass reads 19. Follow the instructions for mounting the dish on the wall, take your time, use at least 10mm wall plugs, drilled into the middle of the brick not into the mortar, remember that when the wind blows, the dish will behave like a large sail and so must be very secure. Use the ladder sensibly, get someone to "foot" it at the base and never work alone in case of accident. To ease installation a fixed dish should have its mounting pole as near vertical as possible.

After having securely fitted the dish to the wall, connect up the LNB and receiver using good quality satellite cable, inserting at the dish end, a meter, to enable exact positioning. These can be purchased very cheaply on eBay, or a more sophisticated model hired from the larger satellite shops. All that is left to do is to roughly align the 19 degree angle and the elevation or latitude which is the angle of the dish to the vertical or to the ground respectively and is shown on the scale marked on the dish mounting bracket. This angle can be found for your geographical location on a website http://www.dishpointer.com or on Google maps. Slowly rotate the dish from this starting point until you have a signal indicated by a beep, then peak the signal by smaller movements sideways and up or down. Voila you are done!

Most modern receivers can be set to auto tune at this point and you may save the most used channels into a list of "favourites" to avoid having an enormous list of channels to deal with. The Astra satellites at 19 degrees broadcast over 1200 channels currently! The instructions for aligning a motorised dish are more complex since the dish has to follow the arc in the sky which the satellites make as they orbit the Earth. The motor is angled to achieve this arc and the dish mount angle will be shown in the motor installation guide. Provided you have done the initial pole mounting perfectly vertical, once the first satellite is found and the dish firmly tightened up, a system known as USALS (Universal Satellite Automatic Location System) can now be activated to find all the available satellites in the arc.

How the DVR Revolutionized My Television Viewing

ot long ago, I thought my Panasonic DVD recorder was the best thing since sliced bread. It would allow me to do cool things like watching a program before it had finished recording and skip through commercials in 30-second chunks with the press of a button.

My DVD recorder made my old VCR look like an Edsel sitting next to a Ferrari. After I started using the DVD recorder I could no longer bear to put up with the joys of VCR use such as rewinding and the bulky tapes that were practically the size of a brick and required a warehouse to store them in.

As much as I love my DVD recorder it does not get much use these days. That's because I have upgraded to a DVR, or Digital Video Recorder. Now it's the DVD recorder's turn to look like an Edsel!

I recently decided to take the plunge and take my television viewing experience to the next level. Since I've been a very satisfied Dish Network customer almost as long as the company has been around, it was an easy decision for me to upgrade my old Dish Network system to a brand-new HD-capable system.

After taking delivery of my new Hitachi 51-inch HDTV set, I ordered my Dish Network upgrade and waited anxiously for the date of installation.

I chose the top-of-the-line Dish Network VIP622 DVR and have been extremely happy with that decision ever since. I am still amazed at some of the capabilities of this system and it has truly revolutionized television viewing for my whole family.

It allows me to watch one program while recording another program and even record two programs at the same time! I surely don't miss many of my favorite programs any more.

I can instruct the VIP622 to record my favorite programs whenever they happen to come on. I can choose to record a single episode of a program, all episodes or just new episodes. Once I set it up to record a favorite program, I don't have to do anything else but watch the recorded programs at a time that is convenient for me.

Similar to my DVD recorder, the VIP622 DVR also has a nifty button that skips ahead 30 seconds when watching a recorded program. This allows me to zap commercials very quickly and with little effort.

The Picture-In-Picture feature allows me to watch one program while also watching a program on another channel that appears in a little "window" on the screen. I use this feature when I change channels during commercials so I can keep an eye on the program I was originally watching and return to it when I see that the commercial break has ended. This is done very easily using the "Swap" button.

The VIP622 also allows me to pause any program I am watching, even if I am not watching a recorded program! This is referred to as pausing live TV and it allows you to press the "Pause" button and walk away from your TV for up to an hour without missing anything. Just press the button to resume the program when you return and pick it up right where you left off! A very nice feature!

You can also set up the VIP622 to feed programming to a television in another room in your house. And since the unit contains two receivers and comes with two remote controls - one of them uses radio signals that work through walls - both televisions can view programming without affecting the other. It's like having two DVR's in one!

After using my DVR for a few months, I cannot imagine going back to the old way of watching TV. The thought of dealing with tapes and stepping through long programming sequences selecting days of the week, times, channels and program length makes me want to cringe.

Having a DVR is almost like having a specialized TV butler who is happy to carry out my instructions to record whatever program I want whenever it happens to come on. That makes me wonder if I should come up with a name for my DVR. Something like "Jeeves" or "Alfred." Whatever name I choose, I am sure my DVR will continue to serve my television viewing needs well into the future.

The digital TV switchover in the UK is happening now and will be complete by 2012, by which time you won't be able to receive the old analogue signal anywhere. It's a great thing in the long term and will improve our TV viewing experience but what are the downsides? The negative side effects for some and the huge opportunity for others?

Bad for People Who Don't Understand It

The confusion and ignorance which has surrounded the switchover is a perfect breeding ground for unscrupulous operators who are moving in to take advantage. It's reported that some TV retailers have instructed their staff to deter people from buying a Freeview box (which may be only around £15) in favour of buying a nice new TV at around £400-500 - this would involve giving misleading information to play down the fact that the Freeview box is all you need, even lying about the technical spec to get the more profitable sale. Whether or not this is true of the high street shops it certainly doesn't take much imagination to see dodgy guys going door-to-door in an area where the switchover is imminent, telling elderly people that they need to have their aerial changed (not usually necessary) or buy and have fitted one of the boxes from their van (probably costing £10 second hand and sold to the victim for £40) or they 'won't be able to watch Eastenders next week'.

Bad for Power Consumption

Until the average household's transition from old gear to new gear is complete there'll be a lot more electricity used, as more devices - Freeview boxes, Sky or Virgin boxes, hard disc recorders etc - are added to people's existing set-up. This will sort itself out over time as firstly we'll see viewers move to TVs with integrated tuners, maybe built in hard disc recorders also, and in the longer term much more convergence between the PC, digital TV, music and all of the entertainment system in a house. Good for the Utility Companies in the Short Term

As all of those new Freeview boxes left on 24-7 will add up to a fair bit of extra revenue. So by further extension...

Bad for the Environment

Although only while people get their set-up right, after which it should be better. The other short term effect on the environment I guess could be the disposal of unwanted old gear. Most aerials don't need to be replaced so that should be minimal, and indeed most TV sets are fine to use with whatever means of digital TV you've opted for (I'm not upgrading my TV until I need to, regardless of switchovers) so disposal of TVs should only go up by a little as people buy the necessary kit receiving and decide to treat themselves to a nicer telly at the same time. The disposal problem may come from VCRs, and even some older DVD recorders that have an analogue tuner - no use after switchover. Now I'm pretty imaginative when it comes to reusing old stuff but I struggle to think of a use for a VCR that can't record - most families playrooms now have better gear than that for watching Peppa Pig on and that's the only idea that comes close.

Bad for Landlords

If you're a landlord or manager of a block of flats, say, you'll need to consider the communal TV set-up - if you had a communal analogue aerial there before that will be fine if everyone in the block wants to get a Freeview box but will it need adjustment in the signal strength, or will there suddenly be a demand from the tenants for permission to put up a Sky dish? Possibly a headache that landlords could do without at the moment, given their stress levels due to the world financial situation and all.

Bad for the Blind?

When the first switchover took place in Whitehaven in Cumbria in October 2007 there was concern from the RNIB that the set top boxes supplied as part of the town's 'Help' scheme didn't have talking menus, the software that helps people with sight problems navigate their way through the channels and other options. One local blind resident, Sharon Bowell, said 'I feel I am being excluded from the so-called digital TV revolution. I have no way of knowing what channel I am on or what programme is on, I can not use the on-screen guide to find out what is on now or next and I can't even record my favourite programmes. I simply won't be able to interact in a meaningful way with any of the affordable set-top boxes or digital TVs that are available in the shops.'

However, aside from this problem with the navigation there are a lot of good features to help those with sight or hearing problems - Sky TV have 2 channels on their Sky Box Office movie service for the hard of hearing and visually impaired (738 features signed movies and 739 narrative films with audio description). They also employ a team of six qualified interpreters as their Sign Language Team, and provides sign language on at least seven of their channels. Sky do seem to be leading the way when it comes to helping those with special needs as they also have available an Easy Grip remote control for people who have problems with their hands - it features big easy-to-read tactile buttons as well.

Good for the Retailers and the Entrepreneurs

Staying in the digital pioneering town of Whitehaven, retailers have seen that the rush to buy Freeview boxes has the benefit of the secondary purchases that come with it. If you're in the shop already the chances are you're going to pick up some batteries, that iPod charger you've been meaning to buy and lots more. In fact it's often been the opposite way round - customers coming in for the £14.99 set-top box are tempted by the lovely flat screen HD TV in the window. Craig Carruthers, manager of Currys in Whitehaven, said of Freeview boxes; 'Our sales are growing 20 to 30 per cent week on week. A lot of people are buying not just a set-top box but a flatscreen TV.' This customer rush caused by the staggered timing of each area's switchover makes me wonder about setting up Freeview Shops advertising Cheap Digital TV, in much the same way as the Fireworks Shops and Christmas Tree stalls appear for a lucrative 2 weeks then disappear. First of all, if you want to watch sports with the DirecTV sports package, you would have to start with their 150+ channels package. This has the basic cable channels that will show some sports, like TNT, TBS, and USA. Sports channels like NFL Network, ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN News are also included (ESPN Classic comes with the 200+ channels package as does your regional Fox Sports Net channel). Then, if you want even more sports you should get the Sports Pack. Extra premiums like a pay movie channel or the Sports Pack start at $12 but it could be a bit less if you order more premium packages.

This package has everything the sports lover craves. You will get more NBA games with NBA TV, horse racing action, ESPNU, CBS College Sports and all the regions of FSN (although some MLB and possibly other games will be blacked due to broadcasting rights agreements). As for the Dish Network Sports Package, it is more or less the same but with a few different variables. With Dish Network, you just get more sports channels the more channels you get. With the Top 100 package you will get ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN News and the other basic channels that show some sports like TNT, etc. Next, the Top 200 package gives you a lot more like ESPN Classic, NFL Network, all the Comcast Sports and FSN channels, the Big Ten Network and basically everything you would get in the Sports Pack minus the soccer channels.

If you want the Fox Soccer Channel and GolTV, you will have have to get the Top 250 and if you absolutely wanted Fox Sports en Espanol you could only get it by adding a Spanish channels package for $13 a month (you can also add Setanta Sports for the same price as DirecTV). So, basically if you want all the sports you can get with the Top 250, it is going to cost you about $55 for that package. Alternatively, you could just get the Top 100 and get the Dish Network Multi-sport Pack (lots of sports for $6 a month, which is the only way to get NBA TV outside of getting a special NBA package). So you see there are ways the Dish Network Sports Package can be more or less than DirecTV depending on what you want.

So, should you get the DirecTV sports package or the Dish Networks sports package? It's really up to you. If you want all of everything, DirecTV is $4 cheaper. There are many sports channels these days, and each provider has just a couple channels that the other will not have, and they each put some channels at different levels of their packages. You have to decide what sports you want to watch the most and if you decide on price you have to do the comparisons yourself. Advice Before You Sign a Satellite TV Service Agreement

When shopping for the ideal satellite dish provider, you unquestionably want to look at all the options offered.

As you can see these fees are very costly if left unchecked. Upgrading your account also imposes additional non-refundable fees.

Make sure all communications of any issues you have are phoned in. Emails are not a viable tool to communicate any problems (though it's an option in their contract). Write down the representative's name, ID# (if they have one) and the nature of your problem and the time of your call, you will need this information for disputes.

Be advised that the Agreement states, you will allow them to place hold to any and all cancellation fees and unreturned equipment fees to your credit/debit card without notice. And that you authorize them to continue to attempt to collect for those fees owed. You acknowledge by signing the agreement that they will have no liability whatsoever for non-sufficient funds, rejected debit, or other charges incurred by you (bank fees for non-sufficient funds) as a result of such attempts to charge and/or place holds on the credit/debit card. Payment of a cancellation fee shall not relieve you of your obligation to pay all unpaid charges on your account. Meaning they still have access to your account as they DEEM necessary.

Significant Signal Interference Warnings:

The below list will cause the signal to be temporarily lost. The satellite service has no way to monitor your loss of signal and will not reimburse you. You have only 90 days from the date of installation to make your adjustments. However, as noted you will not receive a refund of cancellation fees despite the poor transmission service you have received.

The distance and placement of your dish to receiver will directly affect the signal that is delivered.
